The Champions League table after three matchdays has five clubs on a perfect 9 points, and Barcelona hold the last automatic place in the top eight on 6 points. Manchester United, Inter and Napoli sit 20th or lower with matchday 4 on 3 and 4 November.
The stakes are set by UEFA’s rules: the top eight advance directly to the round of 16, and 9th to 24th contest the knockout play-offs. Anyone finishing 25th or lower is out of Europe.
The top eight after three matchdays
| Pos | Club | Points | Goal difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Paris Saint-Germain | 9 | +9 |
| 2 | Aston Villa | 9 | +9 |
| 3 | Liverpool | 9 | +5 |
| 4 | Real Madrid | 9 | +5 |
| 5 | Real Betis | 9 | +3 |
| 6 | Stuttgart | 7 | +5 |
| 7 | Arsenal | 7 | +4 |
| 8 | Barcelona | 6 | +5 |
Paris Saint-Germain top the table on goals scored, 14 to Aston Villa’s 12. The Liverpool v Arsenal preview covers two of the clubs inside the top seven.
The cut-off is tight
Five clubs on 6 points, Como, Manchester City, Club Brugge, Sporting and Dortmund, fill 9th to 13th, directly behind Barcelona.
Barcelona hold eighth on goals scored (11 to Como’s 10) because they are level with Como on points and goal difference, so a single defeat could drop them into the play-off pack.

Big names under pressure
- Bayern Munich are 14th on 5 points, inside the play-off places.
- Inter and Manchester United are tied 20th on 3 points with a goal difference of -1.
- Napoli are 22nd on 3 points and -2.
United lost 4-1 at Como, after which manager Michael Carrick said, as reported by AFP: “For us to play in that way, it’s not acceptable.”
Goals are flowing
By Stadium Wire’s count of UEFA’s published scores, the 54 matches so far have produced 221 goals, or 4.09 per match.
At that scoring rate a heavy win or defeat moves goal difference quickly, which matters for the six clubs level on 6 points.
